Picture with a Circle (1911) by the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944).
Kandinsky believed that colors provoke emotions.

The abstract movement supported abstract act that conveyed a message to their audience. They use their art to to make their audience be challenges and identify the way the artist thinks. To illustrate, around the circa Great Depression, according to "abstract-art-framed.com," they state that "artist again search for a visual language that wold express the difficult... The language of abstract art enabled artists to discover a diverse range of new voices." This demonstrates that they use events to be inspired, to express the way they feel, and trying to make a statement. As a designer, it is similar because designers use inspiration from either what they see or what is going on around them, to have a collection that will also make a statement.

After reading this article i view abstract art as a way to express yourself without following any rule nor structure, its like doodling but having a purpose behind the art. I feel like it connects with fashion design many ways such as prints, it doesn't necessarily need to have a pattern. Hence, like i fashion design designers are inspired by many things just like artists, Artist like Arshile Gorky was inspired by memories, many other artists are influenced by music, feelings, memories and these factors are closely associated with how designers are also inspired. Abstract art does inspire me because throughout its art ill be able to express anything, it would be a way to release my creativity without being formal. In the article it says" all aspects of life tend themselves to interpretation through abstract art-beliefs,fears, passions etc."

Abstract art to me, means art that doesn't necessarily have a conventional meaning. It's not as easily definable as art from the renaissance, for example. When people look at abstract art, everyone walks away with a different meaning, unlike other art forms. This movement means to me, as an artist, a way to express myself in a way that hasn't been seen before. It's a chance to bring to life my ideas in unconventional forms. It connects to fashion design since the "rule breaking" of abstract art allows me to "break the rules" of fashion design by creating garments and illustrations with unique structures, patterns, fabrics and colors. Abstract art does inspire me. I am inspired by all that abstract art allows me to say, without having to say anything. The article put it best by saying, "The language of abstract art enabled artists to discover a diverse range of new voices which communicated emotion, memory, inner strength, spiritual beliefs and provided a dramatic platform for them to have their say." This is true for me and my art.

After reading his article, it is clear to me as an artist, that abstract art is not about portraying a literal subject to the reader. Instead, it "engages and challenges the intellect... and challenges the emotions". In a world where it is so easy to find the answer to almost any question by the simply using the internet, abstract art forces one to find their own answers. "The viewer has to let go of a need to understand what the artist is trying to say and instead tune into their own feeling response to the art piece", making abstract art more of a personal experience who I am very fond of. Abstract Art definitely inspires me as an artist, because i love the feeling of independence and love to crate my own definition of things. Having the freedom to see abstract artwork in many different forms can trigger many ideas in me and provides countless opportunities for inspiration, in my opinion. Perhaps even more so than artwork that is meant to be a clear depiction of something else.

As an artist this movement means there is now room to break the rules of typical art and to not be criticized for it. This connects to fashion designs because designers can now express themselves differently through clothing and do something unimaginable. By doing things like this, designers can inspire others and help them break out their shell so they can do what they want, and what they want, not what society wants. Abstract art does inspire me because it is a different way to express your feelings and views, and its changing the meaning of art as a whole like in the article, when the author writes " Artist have always sought new ways to express their changing world but the arrival of the twentieth century brought with it unprecedented scientific and technological development"

After reading the article, I discovered that the movement changes the perspective of the artwork. With Abstract art the viewer wouldn't view my art in my perspective.Instead, they`re allowed to create their own view and feeling towards the Abstract artwork."Artists again searched for a visual language that would express the difficult, dangerous and changing world around them."Which allows the artist to give the viewers the ability to have their own emotion, memory and beliefs through Abstract art. It can connect to fashion in the sense of giving inspiration to the designer by the way the designer itself interprets a piece of abstract art.I wouldn't say I'm inspired by abstract work.

As artists and/or fashion designers, we believe creativity comes from our minds and hand, creativing the perfect piece of a painting or a garment. After reading the article, I was inspire. Simply inspire. Abstract art is a form of art, a type of art where you can break the rules create something more outgoing. Of course there is no rules, it is more like free draw.

After reading the article I discovered that abstract art breaks away from traditional representation. This type of art can be interpreted by many different people in various ways. This relates to fashion design because designers can express themselves differently through their clothing. While they may think of their clothes being one way, somebody else (buyer or just viewing) can interpret the clothing in a totally different way. Whether it's through the colors used, shapes, style, or accessories incorporated with it. Designers can inspire others to think outside the box and do something different, not just to follow the rules. Abstract art inspires me because it helps remind me that the "rules" can be broken. It also reminds me not to be afraid to do something different because they famous painters that did do art differently, their work got very well known. Abstract art also allows me to use different shapes and colors when I am designing something and the colors don't have to match or flow together. There are also different shapes involved so I feel that abstract art gives me a wide variety of things to choose from.

Abstract art is a form of self expression that differs from other genres of art. This type of art leaves the observer in a confused position, because the meaning of the work is not clear. But the beauty of abstract art is that it can hold a different meaning for each person. The key is not to think too hard about it. Abstract art naturally conveys emotions within a person, and people can have different responses to the same piece of work. When abstract art first became popular, it served as a new and different form of expression that broke boundaries unprecedented in the history of art. The movement was very large and meaningful and was connected to the current events of the given time periods. Art has always been a beautiful form of expression for many people, but abstract art is unique in that its meaning is up to you. The different shapes, colors, and illusions can strike up a personal response within you that you may not even understand. The mysteriousness behind abstract art is what makes it something to truly appreciate. This is very inspiring, as it shows a creative side that does not need a reason or an explanation, but rather can be left to the audience to interpret and experience for themselves.

After reading the article, I realized that abstract art is not about stating the obvious and generalizing the subject. Its about taking shapes, lines, forms, etc and making it into something that is rare but recognizable with emotion. The abstract art movement that all started because of "progressive thinking" means something to me as an artist because I am then able to incorporate it into my work. Stated in the article "The language of abstract art enabled artists to discover a diverse range of new voices which communicated emotion, memory, inner strength, spiritual beliefs..." is what makes me think about what I can really do with the idea of abstract art, especially in the field of fashion design. So much can be extracted from an art piece that can be used as inspiration to build a collection that can have the same heavy emotion. Which is why I see myself actually using the aspects of abstract art because there is so much to take from it that would make a fashion design strong.

As an artist abstract art means freedom. There's no rule or regulations to abide by. No restrictions tying you down. You're free to create what you want without the need for a technical background in drawing. Abstract art to me is about conveying an emotion to your audience through color, shape, lines and materials; no images required. Even though there are rules in fashion the true designers are the ones who defy them and create their own abstract approach. Abstract art inspires me to let go, be loose and just create. The end product will speak its own language to who ever is admiring it at that moment.

After reading the article to me the abstract movement was a way that people express their emotions , struggles through their art. Abstract art creates this free mind where for a moment you don't have to over think something you just do it. Whatever you are feeling is express though the painting in ways that other people could relate to it in their own way." The abstract artist communicates with us in a way that allows us to find our own personal response to the work" and I totally agree with that. I find abstract art to be kind of inspirational because instead of writing down your emotions and thoughts your expressing that through art , which you can look back at and some how it can inspire you to keep going or either heal you from what's going on.i think abstract art connects with fashion because many designs get there inspiration from something they have seen which sometimes is art and from that one painting you can get so many diiferent ideas that you can create a whole collection back on that one abstract painting.

Abstract art is art that conveys a message without being outright. An artist can use shapes and colors instead of visually realistic details. To me, abstract art means self expression when you either cannot express yourself or you need to find another way to express yourself. It goes against the grain of what everyone else is doing. The article said that abstract art makes people try to stop worrying about understanding the art, but tune into their feelings about the piece (2). This means, art is supposed to promote feelings, but be open to interpretation. Abstract art connects to fashion design because designers try to convey an idea or message through clothing without being discrete. They use shapes colors and patterns in their designs and create an abstract look. The clothing can be interpreted by the wearer and can be transformed. It provokes feelings because the wearer feels a certain way while wearing the clothes, and viewers have an opinion of it. Abstract art can sometimes inspire me, it just depends on the piece. I could love a piece because it is appealing and provokes emotion, but for some other pieces, I just don't understand and do not like it as much. The need for interpretation can also change my feelings about art.

Abstract art is all about the connection a person has to a piece. Unlike other art forms where the artist's message is clear, abstract art allows the viewer to place their own feelings into the art and interpret it that way. Abstract art uses shapes and lines to create something completely unconventional and sometimes unrecognizable. “Abstract art engages and challenges the intellect but also engaged and challenges emotions”, abstract art seems to be centered around the heart and brain working together to unravel a piece that is unique in its own way. Abstract art connects to fashion because it's innovative and would be a great way for people to get a different feel from a collection. Both abstract and fashion are art forms that are expressed in different ways from the norm. Abstract art broke the boundaries that surrounded art and fashion breaks boundaries almost everyday. Abstract art does inspire me. “Artists again searched for visual language that would express the difficult, dangerous, and changing world around them” this quote inspired me the most as when I design I do take from the world around me and its problems. Abstract art is very different and eye catching. I would like to use a lot of that in my designs.

After reading this article, I learned that abstract art is free. What this movement means to me as an artist is no rules. This is because the article states " To name but a few, can all be used as subject matter and expressed freely and uniquely." What this quote is saying is that abstract art can be used in any shape or form according to the artist. This connects to fashion design because you can hey inspiration from anything then create it into whatever clothing you want. There isn't rules on designing garments. It's the designers choice to have a unique presentation. Abstract art does inspire me because I like to be unique and free. You're not stressing yourself out about requirements or rules. Also with being an artist you don't want people telling you what to do with upcoming masterpiece. For example, the article states " you are there with the painting, with yourself and with all of the emotion and spiritual energy..." What this meant to me was that you're by yourself physically but emotionally you're not.

Anonymous said...

I defiantly agree with you when you said that abstract art makes a person find their own answers. The need of understanding isn't there for abstract art ... It's like a go with the flow concept.

Anonymous said...

What I learned from reading this article about abstract art is that it's a way of expression through shapes and colors it's showing emotions through the colors and dramatic shapes which makes it unique And free rule free expression. As a artist movement to me is the was something flows to show mood emotions. Abstract art Is connected to fashion because to me you can use the inspiration of abstract and but it into your designs to not only give it a unique look but to tell a story to tell emotions through your clothing . Abstract art does inspire me because it doesn't only help me make wonderful clothes but it helps me tell a story and express my myself through our my design and gives it a personal touch to each piece.

I agree with you cause I feel like adding abstract to designs completely gives a unique feel to your creations and gives it emotions and is challenging and I and green with you that abstract art is a connection to each piece you make because while I was answering the questions I said something similar to what u said because the connection you create with abstract to your pieces is adding a personal feel to your work with makes it more unique in its own way so I agree with you completely

Anonymous said...

I agree with Jazmin because abstract art is a way to express yourself throughout shapes and colors, calling it a free rule of expression would be a great way to describe it. Abstract art does make a person more thoughtful in a way to be able to be explicit while being inexplicit.

Anonymous said...

After reading the article , to me the meaning of abstract its painting freely with no real guidelines . Abstract is about everyone leaving with a different meaning after looking at the painting . This makes it way different from what regular art is where artist use clear details and realistic objects. Abstract is all about using vibrant colors and shapes to give off different messages. To me the abstract movement is all about being unique and expressing yourself in a way no one could express it for you . It connects to fashion design when it comes to patterns in collections. Some fashion designers use abstract as an inspiration in creating a collection. Abstract art because it doesn't only mean that it has to be used in paintings but while constructing a collection it would be a great inspiration that would lead to an outstanding collections , it's different.

I definitely agree with Layla in which abstract art is a form of self expression and how the mystery behind paintings that are abstract is what is really appreciated .

Abstract art is a way to get the viewer to see things without recognizable visual reference point. With the use of shapes, forms, lines, and colors to interpret art. It connects to fashion design because designers sometimes step outside the box to create designs that are very extravagant. Abstract art inspires me because it's very interesting. There's always something that stands out in abstract art, to where you can look at it for two or more minutes. It inspires me to be different and step out the box as well. A lot of great designs can come from an abstract idea; because it engages and challenges the intellect but it also engages and challenges the emotions

I know we're suppose to agree with someone else's comment, but I have to point out something that I strongly disagree with. When Isabella said "When people look at abstract art, everyone walks away with a different meaning, unlike other art forms." I feel that this is a false statement. Everyone walks away from every form of art with a different meaning. It's one of the most remarkable thing about art; the fact that twenty people could be staring at the same piece of work, yet see and feel something completely different from the person standing next to them. All art forms provide room for interpretation, abstract art is just different because we don't have a recognizable image to distract us.

I agree with Daiquan for saying Abstract art has no restrictions, you're free to do what you want. As for fashion designers, they can create outstanding garments with an abstract concept.

Unknown said...

I agree with Carolina, due to the fact that she said that "abstract art gives you independence." This is true because there is no wrong way or correct way to construct abstract art, it's how you view it.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Briana when she said" ... break the rules of typical art and to not be criticized for it." This is very true because abstract art has no limitations and since abstract art is so popular, others wouldn't judge you based on your work unlike typical art pieces where critics would thinks it's "weird"

Unknown said...

I agree with what Alexis said of abstract art being about painting freely with no real guidelines. This is true since to me that is exactly what makes abstract art so unique from all the different art forms. Abstract art allows people a sense of freedom since there are no guidelines to follow which helps in producing extremely creative pieces.

Reponse to Aranae's comment

I agree with what you said about artists of abstract art wanting to confuse their audience in a way with a different kind of art. I also agree that abstract art is a form of expression and saw its peaks during times of hardship. The connection you made about fashion designers receiving inspiration from the events around them in comparison to artists of abstract art is a nice way to show that both artists and designers can make a powerful statement based on what they feel and what they experience.

I agree with your statement, "... break the rules of typical art and to not be criticized for it." It does give the artist to express themselves and get inspired by creating something that they want.

I agree with Johanna that abstract art is a form of self expression, however, I don't think that artists doodle and say there is a meaning behind it. They have feeling while they are creating the art, and every color and shape might represent something. The art provokes feelings from the artist, itself, and the viewer, so it can be interpreted any way.

I would have to agree with Dalia Medina on the statement that "abstract art inspires me because it helps remind me that rules can be broken" because its a strong statement to what can be done, especially with fashion that deals with so much creativity and a certain outcome. I would also have to agree with her when she states that abstract art is something that can be so out of the ordinary and it doesn't matter how art or fashion can be demonstrated.

I agree with Alexis where she said that abstract isn't only for paintings. I feel that their isn't any limitations on where the idea of something being abstract can be viewed, it can be as simple as that paper is abstract because it's uniquely different.

I agree with you, in the fact that art is an outlet for self expression. I understand what you mean when you say abstract art evokes a feeling rather than just telling you what you should feel. Abstract art is also inspirational to me, and it's thoughtful that you do express your true feelings towards abstract art by saying it's inspirational but you sometimes just don't get it.

Anonymous said...

I believe that abstract art is a way for people to vent out their feelings. Therefore, it doesn't follow rules or need to follow the usual art basics. This movement helped people find a voice through their work and inspired others to find their voice through unconventional ways. To me, this movement means freedom of expression all around. The simple fact that people use anything to be inspired like memories as Arshile Gorky was, or geometry like Piet Mondrian, shows artists are not limited to be inspired by surroundings or a person, it goes beyond that, it's like it comes from the soul almost. It's deep and it's different and not to mention eye-catching. Abstract art connects to fashion design in a handful of ways, the most common being fabric patterns. In such a modern time that we live in, we could see how fabric is being more modernized and leaning more towards art than fashion to appeal to all sorts of people, There are even machines that allow you to create your own fabric pattern which shows how to concept of freedom shown is abstract art is now being involved in fashion as well. Abstract art inspires me a lot. Whenever i sketch, i always try to incorporate something different whether it's making stripes go with circles somehow, or doing a weird mix and match type of design. I use the sense of freedom that abstract art gives and let myself go in my designs. Overall, abstract art is a beautiful and creative way to express oneself in a positive manner.

I agree with the majority of the comments, specifically Aiyanna's because she mentioned how (paraphrasing) abstract art is all about seeing beyond just a painting. I also agree with Layla's post because she mentioned how abstract art can "hold a different meaning for each person" and i agree with that.

@Ralphy, I believe her art piece is different and her fashion croqui alone is abstract as well. @Victoria, her art piece gives a abstract illusion. For instance, due to the fact that lips close she put the lips on the center front of the coat where it opens; which I found very interesting.

Anonymous said...

@genesis her abstract illustration was done on a male model and i think that makes her illustration stand out and she did well rendering her fashion illustration. @keyanna her illustration really caught my attention because she had a strong illustration, the dress she created was very nice and the head piece she used really completed the illustration.

Unknown said...

@Briia Her abstract art was done with so much detail and care, and it's obvious to see. I love that it's so intricate and that she captured this on her illustration's head and fashion rendering. @Daiquan his use of newspaper/magazine article was very creative. I like that it was used in the background of his illustration because it tied everything in together.

Anonymous said...

@Victoria and @Briia incorporated their graphic illustration with their fashion illustration very well. They took advantage of the abstract art idea and came up with a very good outcome for their fashion illustration. The art tied in really good with their fashion and croqui illustration.

I like how all the art pieces are unique and how the fashion illustration ties in with them. I like the way @Keyanna's fashion illustration not only ties in with her graphic illustration, but it also gives it a new dimension. The use of lines and curves are executed well to create something stylish not only on the clothes, but the head. I also like @Layla's graphic illustration and fashion illustration individually and altogether. The art work is unique, thought out, and minimalistic. I like how the fashion illustration is not just a copy of the graphic illustration, but uses minimalist elements to create its own style.

Overall everyone did a phanomonal job on their art work. But on the specifically stood out to me was Genesis's art work for the simple fact that everyone else picked female models because that's what we are use to but she went out of the comfort zone by using a male croqui and it turned out great her use of the different shades of grey was really creative and went well with the magazine paper detailing. Another piece that stood out to me was ralphy's piece. I loved the silhouette specifically and the movement that the body is portraying. Also she excited her abstract design onto her garment perfectly it was very nice. Every one did a great job, loved them all .

@Victoria, I love how artistic your piece is and how well your graphic art piece tied in with your fashion illustration. All of the different objects and designs were very creative and meaningful and your piece would definitely leave an impact on those who view it!

@johanna I love the colors you used and how well your graphic art illustration went in with your fashion illustration. The way you translated the graphic art piece to the fashion piece, using tons of abstract pieces in your fashion illustration, is just beautiful. Very meaningful piece!

@Yankarla, I Loved how everything was just the basic black and white. The graphic illustration and fashion illustration reminded me of 101 Dalmations with the famous Cruella De Vil. I really liked the way you rendered the design into sections onto the dress style and face. Good job :)

I love Ralphy's art piece and Carolinas piece. Ralph's art piece is very simple but bold and eye catching. I can see the design being worn on a nice, elegant dress worn on by a celebrity. With Carolinas piece, I like how its black vs white. The white stands out on the black and vice versa. Her piece is also very simple but theres just enough on the art piece to fill the paper.

I loved Carolina and Victoria's pieces. They rendered their graphic artwork nicely. Carolina's piece looked very elegant and she used her art piece creatively on her fashion illustration. Victoria's piece was very abstract and the most memorable part was the expressive lips on both her art and fashion illustration.

@Briia I really love what you did with the models head. It's very captivating and gives an illusion of three-dimension. @Kieana I just really love your abstract art; and the way you used it in your illustration was intriguing. The skin color of the model and the design, with the abstract print, makes the model seem evil and poisonous, almost like a scorpion.

Yankarla Gonzalez said...

@Keiana I loved how your overall abstract art board came out, it has a very interesting and clean look to it that really captured my attention. Especially the fashion illustration that had a very out there head piece almost representing and certain culture and what also made it stand out even more is the outcome of how the skin rendering with a red marker made the piece stronger as a whole. @Victoria you have an abnormal yet really interesting feel to your overall abstract board that really made me think how well you were able to execute it in a very realistic manner.

I fell in love with @Isabella piece, especially with the abstract art work. All of the mutiple things that is going on with in her art piece. The purple paper that is on the back of the fashion illustration was a nice touch. Well done! I also fell in love at @Ralphy's work, the way you have your fashion illustration look like she is about to come out of the board. As well as the blue background, beautiful!

I loved @Briia's piece, it looks really elegant, classy and clean. The dress looks like something that i would wear. Both the art piece and the garment were really strong. I also like @Keyanna's piece because it is also really strong and it also looks like something that i might wear to an event.

I love @Victoria's piece and @Daliah's. Victoria, you were able to capture a realistic abstract piece and turn it into a modern and futuristic garment, which is not easy to do so I applaud you. Dahlia, I love how to were able to take the concept of your art work and transfer it to your garment and how you were able to transfer the texture almost exactly.
