The American Folk Art museum Field Trip
Exhibition title: Liberty Needle work
Artist Name: Lucina Hudson
Medium used: watercolor, silk with metallic tread and spangles
The theme of the art work: Rediscovery/ liberty
Description of the artwork: The artwork showed a girl that posed similar to the statue of liberty. She seemed so elegant and rich. In her right hand she held up a flag which I think indicated liberty. In her left hand she held a bouquet of flowers which looked very similar to the way that the statue of liberty holds the book and the torch.

The American Folk Art Museum
Exhibition Title: Map quilt
Artist Name: Unidentified
The theme was The United States Map.

The American Folk Art Museum was very interesting. Rachel our guide really helped me understand what was going on in the paintings because she explained it deeper in details. One of my favorite pieces was the map quilt. It had a lot of details like the stitching and the different types of fabrics. Like around each state there was a different type of stitching and the border too.

Aim- What did you learn from the field trip to the American Folk Art Museum?
What I learned from the Folk Museum is some people never had the opportunity to go to an art school, they also never had the money to buy all the expensive paints, the way these people expressed them self by drawing is in a different view like a drawing I had seen which was called “ In the world” by Consuelo “ Chelo” Gonzalez Amezcua it was amazing she was Mexican and she barley had experience and never went to an art school and her drawing was drawn with pens cause she portably didn’t have money for all those expensive materials. Another painting I had saw was a collection of Henry Darger he was a very unique man and what I learned from him was that there is really something called imagination and that’s what he did. Henry Darger had a full time job but still had the time to do his art work and he wrote a 1,500 page book he was a very dedicated man and when he had passed away his fame was recognized

What I learned from the American Folk Art museum is art is that people can be fantastic artist even if they didn’t go to art school or had any type of artistic skills, some people just use their imagination and it ends up coming out to one of the most valuable pieces of work. Even though their work wasn’t the best they still went and tried there hardest and some of the work was the best ever. Jennifer was our tour guide and she really explained a lot to us about how the artist used different techniques and thought outside of the box and not like everyone else. She also explained how each artist can bring different things. Thank you Jennifer for helping me understand more with the quilts and the actual quality and value of each patch :] -Kaylah C.<3

What I learned from the Folk Art Museum was quilt art and unusual inspirations and artwork. With our tour guide Jennifer, she talks about how some artists didn’t need to go to an art school to learn how to draw or paint. Some artists were just born with it, or had a lot of practice. We had learned that one particular person kept his artistic skill hidden until he passed away. People found art work all over his apartment and showed most of his work to major city museums just like the Folk Art Museum. We have also learned that artwork has been done all in pen or in just fabric. Artists would express how they feel in different types of art whether it’s in pen, paint, clay, or in fabric. That’s what I have learned in the Folk Art Museum.

AFAM Reflections: Yesterday, at the American Folk Art Museum, I learned that most of the artist made their creation based on their feelings. It was very interesting. I saw one of the arts that were created by Consuelo Gonzales Amezcua. She drew her art with regular ball point pen. It was very creative, colorful, and full of details. Another was Henry Darger. He was the only artist that was very weird. His inspiration was most girls, but he drew them with *ahem* male genitals. He wasn’t very well known until he died in his eighty’s. His landlord found the pictures and his art while he was clearing out the apartment in Chicago. Overall the trip was very fun and it was nice to see other works of arts by other people.

The American Folk Art Museum Field Trip :

I thought that the trip was very intersting and informative, I learned alot things i didnt know like for example different types of needlewok . On one of the artwors it was a a quilyt with the United Stated Map on it . I found that very cool because on each border there were different types of stitch work, very complex & intricate. throughout the museum there were different types of artwork like water color paintings, scultptures and even a whole floor soley based on quilts. The museum really was unique because of the one of a kind special artworks .

I’m not into folk art. But I learned many things I didn’t imagined from the field trip to the American Folk Art Museum. When I was exploding the art work with the class and with the the tour guide Jennifer, She was explaining us the artist art and told us these people didn’t went to school of art however; they mostly use their imagination and their surroundings. I learned their art work means a lot to them and their country that represent themselves. I find the trip interesting more than I expected but I would like to come to the Folk Art Museum once again. -x Lupe.G

Our tour guide named Rachel was telling us the story behind some of the artworks. I really loved the artwork called the “Liberty Needlework” by Lucina Hudson. A 12 year old girl used watercolors on silk with metallic thread going around the artwork while her dad went to war. I thought that was really incredible and inspiring in so many ways.

When I went to the American Folk Art Museum I Learned That people can be Creative in there own way some artist put pictures in there pictures and some of them Tell stories the Mural that I found more interesting was the design called “The World” because in her Mural she tells a story and she has many details and pictures The tour Guide Ms. Jennifer she was very helpful learning about the picture because she gave us details and much more in my opinion I would come back to the Museum to learn more about the rest of the artifacts because I found the first part to be interesting The tour guide was able to give us facts and her opinions about the art and based on her opinions we reflected and restated what we felt about the picture and we were also able to answer questions and Ms. Jennifer was able to answer all our questions During the trip I learned about different types of needlework and pen strokes and colors what I noticed was that many of the artist used recyclable materials and I thought it was cool.

Aim: What did you learn from the field trip to the American Fol Art Museum?

At the American Folk Art Museum, I enjoyed how each art piece had a message and how they weren’t there because someone learned art skills and wanted to give a show to others. However, they were pieces where artists with imaginative minds would just express their feelings in any way they want. An art piece, which our tour guide, Jennifer, presented to us, was the Mix media by Henry Darger. His story touched me; having to work a full time job and living in a messy home yet have so much art. He had a message in every piece and was dedicated to his creativity and designs. I really enjoyed the trip and the feeling and vibe the museum had. Jennifer, our tour guide did a really good job in presenting the pieces to my group. I hope to revisit again.

On the trip yesterday I learned that not every artist had expensive tools and most weren’t taught to draw.
I learned that many artists drew about their heritage and their emotions. For example Consuela Gonzales Amenzcua she came from Mexico and used ball point pen to draw patterns and birds on her drawing. Not only was that she telling about her life in the drawing by mixing Mexican traditions and American currency.
Another example of what I learned would be Henry Darger. His art work is unique in an odd way, he use stamps as frames and made collages or he’d rip papers out of a coloring book and simply color it. He even wrote books that contained thousands of pages. Sadly after he died that’s when he became famous.
I learned a lot about many artists at the museum as I mentioned.

I enjoyed the trip to the American folk art museum and learned a lot. Like how quilts were a big part of folk art .some were even used to make a statement or get a message across. Like the freedom quilt that was displayed and the very informational Jennifer, our escort said some quilt even were used to show how to get to the underground rail road. Many of the different quilts artists were inspired by a variety of things .My favorite was the Tulip and rose bouquet quilt by Elizabeth Schumacher Leece, she was inspired by her garden. The quilt looked like a soft white square pattern as the background with a bouquet medallion of flowers in the center surrounded by two rings of flowers .It made me feel very relaxed, calm, soft ,comfortable as if I was floating. I also learned from the floor full of the works of Henry Darger, who used mix media. I haven’t heard of a artist who’s works weren’t discovered ,until after he passed away. The many illustrations from his book showed how creative he is and different from the way many people see things. I really liked the blown up photograph of his room that was in black and white. It was very messy and had a lot of artwork on the walls of the artist and it made me feel like I was in another time living in a different kind of world I was unfamiliar with. Overall I enjoyed the experience and artworks and am looking forward 2 going back with my camera.

I learned that not every famous artist has to go to school, or that every famous artist has to be well educated. I also learned that artist paint or draw from their feelings. For example The Freedom Quilt. It was by Jessie B. Telfair. She was a black African American and she got fired because she tried to vote. She wanted freedom so much that she made this quilt. This quilt was made with the feeling of wanting freedom. Another thing that I learned was that most artists died before people realize the worth of their art. One of these artists was the artist that wrote a book by himself, and then drew the pictures by himself also. He worked as a Janitor at a hospital and lived in a small apartment by himself. After he died, people found his art and story and they realized that he was a great artist.

I enjoyed our trip to the American Folk Art Museum. Our tour guide was Jennifer who took us to look at a painting called In The World by Consuelo “Chelo” Gonzalez Amezcua. It was from a woman in Mexico who moved to Texas and I think she drew her picture because maybe it was a remembrance of her culture that she missed. The next one was a blown up picture of a man named Henry Darger who was a janitor and died and when the landlord was going through his apartment he found a whole bunch of his artwork. He had a full time job and still had time to make art and write several versions of a 15,000 page book. The picture we looked at was a blown up picture of Henry Darger’s apartment and on the wall was a lot of his artwork but it also showed what kind of living/drawing environment he lived and worked in which wasn’t tidy. After we looked at the picture and had a discussion we went around on the rest of the floor which was dedicated to all his art work. Then we went to look at a quilt made by a African American woman who lost her job because she tried to be able to vote and then after she knitted a quilt stating “FREEDOM” with 49 squares. Then we looked around at the different quilts and we had to draw one just like in the exhibit and then we had left and were given pass for five to visit the museum again. I enjoyed the American Folk Art Museum because it was a wonderful learning experience.

What I learn from the folk art museum is that I should not be loud when I’m there. Also to act like lady cause you know stuff happen. This will teach me that the next time when we head out to a trip anywhere I have to act in a better way. I also learn something very important ask questions, if you have anything that you want to figure out, don’t be misses shy and ask a question. A last thing that I have to remember is to stay with the group, never go ahead or stay back, this will teach me a lesson so that I will be allow to go in the next trip. There were also some pretty nice things there like quilts an some sculpture. The picture that I liked the most was (Little Girl with Rolling pin) that picture is I guess for me one of the best pictures there, the artist is unidentified.

What I learned yesterday from the field trip is to stay with the group so that I don’t get yelled at .To follow all instructions that are giving. But not only did I learn safety terms but I learned about some awesome artwork like Sculptures and Quilts with the help of Rachel...that’s the name of the tour guider .I saw this one amazing quilt named Map Quilt. The artist was Unknown because it was created by various People. The Quilts were passed down as a Tradition. The materials that were used were lots of stitching, many different fabrics, and silk cotton. The Theme of the quilt had many different stories behind the U.S. The artwork was really noticeable. You can tell that each artwork has to do with the docking of the Indians and lots of the blue lines between states had something to do with important rivers and valleys. The stitching between states had something to do with the states…like the activities that were mostly done over there. Like there was lots of crop stitching and any other stitching that were done had to do something with the states surrounding it. It was just different and Colorful which made it very unique!

Trip Reflection

The folk art museum field trip that we took on the 10/13/10 was fu I saw some really great pieces of art that I enjoyed looking at. The art work that I liked the most was the needle work by the little girl who was only 11 years old when she made it her name is Lucina. I thought that it was cool because she was so young and she made something so beautiful . I also liked it because it was needle work and I want to learn how to do something similar to that. Another piece that I really liked was the quilt. It was really nice because it was the United States Of America. It was so nice the fabric looked really interesting I wanted to touch it but we couldn’t. It was really detailed I wanted to look at it for the whole time we were there. I want to find out whom made it and why.

Going to this folk art museum I have learned many things. It’s sad to know when people have such amazing talent and amazing artistic skills and aren’t able to afford it. But they used what they had already known about art and they themselves corrected and learned from their own mistakes on their own. One of my favorite piece of art that I liked was the one were the little girl had kitted a picture. It looked so perfectly stitched, point by point. She was only about eleven years old. There was another picture that had women holding her flag up. With houses or kingdom. I think that she’s holding her flag up to show and represent were she’s from and that she is proud to be a part of her country or nation. The artist is unknown. Another piece of art work was the quilt with the shape of the United States of America. It different colors for each state and different stitching. It also had a long blue stitched line which can be put as the Mississippi river. There was so much more too.

The American Folk Museum was a very interesting experience. There were multiple pieces that I enjoyed. My favorite one was the needlework done by the 12 year old girl. It was a different way of creating art that i have never seen before and it also shows that anyone could make art no matter how old you are. I learned that you can make art out of anything including things that you can just find on the street. I like how each piece of artwork has its own story behind it.I would advise for anyone who likes art to go to this museum. Its fun for everyone and you will definitely learn something new.

I was fascinated by the fact that all of the artists used recyclable materials to produce their work of art. They are clearly conscious about preserving the environment

Computer Art Illustration
American Folk Art Museum
Expedition: “In the World” & “Untitled”
Artist Name: González Amézcua, Henry Darger
Medium Used: Ballpoint pen & Watercolor

The theme for “In the World” was about her Hispanic culture and how much she cherishes it. You could tell by the different colors she used in her artwork. I love the way she poses in the picture. The theme for Henry Darger is about a lot of things. Mostly related to how he felt and thought about. I love the big blow out picture of a desk of many pictures of his family. It showed how much his family and religion met to him.
