Gothic Fashion

Halloween is upon us this month and I am reminded of Gothic or what some may call Punk Rock fashion.
How would you define this design category and what is your opinion about this type of fashion? Use internet research to answer this question and site your sources.

Goth and Punk Rock are completely different styles. They do compare in many ways because both styles are expressive yet a little different from other styles. The Goth style was not inspired by music but, had been interprated later on in the music scene. Punk Rock was based on attitude and trash culture. I learned that people can mislead the term for Goth and Punk Rock to be the same thing but, to the both groups that follow that style could be easily offended by being compared to as a Goth or Punk. When you look up Goth, there are Gothic cathedrals, dark and gloomy images and musicians with daring eye makeup. Gothic costumes would be used traditionally for halloween because it has somewhat of a cliche relationship to vampires and witches although the relationship between them is invalid). The image shown in the post have two people dressed as goth ravers (the young generation of Goth). The older generation of Goth is drawn in the culture of old 80s goth bands....The Cure, Bauhaus and Siouxsie & The Banshees to name a few. The goth ravers shown in the photo are interprated by popular "gothic" bands such as Evanescence, and The Rasmus.

punk rock and goth have simillar styles...for example: the use of chains... that is used alot in those styles.. I would say that punk has more color and pop to it. Goth is more dark and black make-up and like in the picture those platform boots. They do use some color here and there..I usually see the color mostly in the hair and things like that. They are not the same though. I know that some people can get confused between the two styles, but if you really pay attention to it you can tell.

Gothic fashion is a clothing style worn by members of the Goth subculture; a dark, sometimes morbid, eroticized fashion and style of dress.[1] Typical Gothic fashion includes black dyed and crimped hair, bright lips and black clothes.[1] Both male and female goths sometimes wear dark eyeliner and dark fingernails. Styles are often borrowed from the Punks, Victorians and Elizabethans. BDSM imagery and paraphernalia are also common.[1] Some haute couture designers, particularly Alexander McQueen and John Galliano, have been associated with the goth aesthetic.

British punk fashion deliberately outraged propriety with the highly theatrical use of cosmetics and hairstyles: eye makeup covering half the face, hair made to stand in spikes, cut into a "Mohawk" or another dramatic shape, colored with vibrant unnatural hues. Punk clothing typically adapted or mutilated existing objects for artistic effect: pants and shirts were cut, torn, or wrapped with tape, written on with marker or defaced with paint; safety pins and razor blades were used as jewelry (including using safety pins for piercings); a black bin liner bag (garbage bag) might become a dress, shirt or skirt. Leather, rubber and vinyl clothing was also common..

If you ask me goth styles is pretty unique. I think its the kind of style that most peole might compare to punk stlyes. It would be a great way of expressing it on Halloween because it shows how much people like the dark side in those scary movies such as people with pointy teeth dark colored makeup, dark highlights and you know...black clothes. It's a very new way of wearing clothes and expressing of how you feel.

Gothic fashion to me consists of dark fashion. It means incorporating dark fabrics and styles in to your designs. Many musicians have taken up this goth/punk style and many times the style has many times been partnered with rock music and heavy metal.

I believe that Goth and Punk rock culture derive from two distinct periods of time in which we as individuals celebrate mainly throughout music and fashion. For example in my point of view a studded leather jacket with a lapel collar adorned with patches is an interpretation of punk rock fashion, not necessarily but it is most commonly seen in the media. on the other platform boots and colt like things are an interpretation of goth fashion. people might be intimidated by this sense of style and may react to it as dark therefore assimilated with Halloween but i see it as a way of expressing how yo feel and who you are. I think the pictures validly interpret a mainstream goth, but there is more than that. Also I've noticed that this sense of fashion is associated with a certain genre of music. Goth with metal rock and punk rock with alternative rock. Emos fall under the category of goth fashion while scene people fall under punk rock. Personally I like selecting pieces from all types of cultures and recreating them within my style. I don't like to fall under one category. I love clothing and if i like it i wear it.

I would define this design category as dark and very expressive consider the type of music that it was influenced by. punk rock is kind of rebelious to me because the music seems very angry.i think that this fashion is a way to express yourself. it uses alot of black and dark makeup but it is a way of dressing.there is also stockings, spiked belts, plaid skirts and many hair dyes.

Punk Rock Fashion is the same as Gothic fashion. This type of fashion is raw in your face, mostly black white and read with chains and spikes and belts. To me Its a rebilous i dont go by the rules thing.

I learned alot from Henryka's blog response, I honestly didn't know the difference between the two since I get the same vibe from both fashion styles (rebelious, dark, unique). Thx for the clarification (:

Goth and punk are similar but fairly different. Goth is more of an all black thing and this much color.Punk i believe is about crazy hairstyles and attitude. It has more of an up beat feeling and goth is more laid back.

When people look at these two styles, any person that is uncultivated & unfamiliar with the styles can misinform another & say they are the same. Though they share the same colors; like to what Henryka said, they don't have the same inspiration behind them. While hippies ruled the 60s, Punk emerged in the 70s with an i don't give a &^$% type of feeling. They're clothes are more of a D.I.Y which involves a lot of plaid, safety pins, unusual hairstyles & anything else that is not considered "in the norm". On the other hand lies Goth. It expresses the dark side of human nature that can also be beautiful. Goth is known as a subculture that made way in the 80's & dressed to respond to the conditions of the world & music during this time period. While punk has a grungy look to it, goth stereotypically has a more classic horror/Victorian culture theme around it. The clothes are made up of dark reds, velvet, corsets, lace & anti-religious & religious symbols. Now you ask yourself, who would've known?

*Beat ignorance; Stay informed.

some may think It's kind of scary & dark - which symbolizes Halloween. It's nice in some ways & unique, but it's just not my type of trend. I like It though :)

Displaying Goth or Punk Rock appearances is a way of expressing your individuality, and letting the society know that you are NOT a conformist, and that you are truly comfortable being yourself.

Goth and Punk Rock styles are almost the same because they sort of use chains and black clothing. Although they are very much different because they express different opinions

In the Fall of 2008 the Fashion Institute of technology (FIT) had an exibit around Halloween time which featured Gothic styled clothing along with jewelry and other accessories.
In the exibit I can recall a particularly intresting few articles of "clothing" which were not only made of metal but were made of house hold appliances/contraptions fixated to hold posture from the back to the ankles.
There were also several spikes involved.

Gothic Fashion to me is the stand out reject kid's answer to Preppy fashion. I would define the gothic or punk fashion as very dark and mysterious. I think that its diffrent and unique and perfect for halloween. Some others might think its scary and too diffrent but i think its a perfect fit for the halloween times. However i dont ever think i could see myself trying the style.
